wasted time

On myspace a while back I was talking about Angel and how he was going to get a Speech Bulb. I wanted to update you guys on how that is working out.
Every year I take Angel to a Cleft Palate clinic in Las Cruces. When he was younger he would have to go more often than yearly. At the clinic a team of Doctors all work together to give the patient the best possible outcome. The team usually consists of a Pediatrician, Speech Therapist, ENT, Plastic surgeon, Oral surgeon, Dentist, Orthodontist, Nutritionist, Psychologist, and a Social Worker to organize it. This team, for the most part, stays the same. They treat all the cleft kids in Southern New Mexico. When we attend this clinic, they come up with a course of treatment for the child. Then they set up appointments for you or refer you to an additional Dr. if needed. They keep track of the child's progress until they reach adulthood. A cleft is not a simple fix, it takes years and many people to correct.
At the last clinic we attended, the team suggested that we see Dr. W in Albuquerque, a Prosthodontist, to see about getting a Speech Bulb. This would prevent air escaping through the nose when Angel speaks. Before we could get in to see Dr. W we had to first go to an ENT clinic in Albuquerque to make sure he actually needed a Speech Bulb. So we did that and got a referral to see this Dr. W.
So after driving all over the state and seeing a number of Doctors we finally get to see Dr. W. He said could help us, he would be happy to help, but not while Angel has braces. The speech bulb could not clip on over the braces.
I'm completely annoyed that we went all over the state and jumped through all these hoops, and wasted alot of time and gas money, only to find out that Angel can't get his speech bulb for a couple of years. You think that someone would have said something about Angel's braces before we wasted all that energy. After all Angel is not the first cleft palate patient they have treated.

Yikes, Rachel. That does suck.

As a clinician myself, I would want to know that I referred someone for something that they didn't qualify for, so I didn't repeat the same mistake. I would definitely recommend letting the team know what happened to you.
